Monday Report

Mum didn't sleep that well last night - her IV machine (did Romans call them Four Machines?) was beeping and the staff didn't respond super-quickly to it. She was also a little tired from her radiation treatment today. Some good news is that her hair has stopped falling out not because there is no more to fall out - presumably the ill effects of the previous chemo have slowed down now.

Mum's tastebuds were ticked with the delight of being able to not only taste but *swallow* today! She's still just having a little bit, but she loved the ice cream and coffee (on ice) that she had today. She tasted a bit of tofu but needed a bit of coffee mixed with it to give it some flavour. There is still some residual blistering on her tongue but her lips are much better and she is so happy at being able to swallow. She is also getting food through her tube so she is definitely more nourished.

She continues to be happy at the paintings in her space, including a watercolour given by Dorothy, and also the funny books that have been gifted by friends. Cards continue to arrive too, and blog comments printed or read over the phone.

Photos of the room to come soon!

Dear Goszi,
We are happy that you are getting better. It is great that you have many well wishing friends.
I recently talked to one of our elementary school classmate (Molnar Mari from Budapest), and she is
wishing for you also, a quick recovery. She remembered you even though that there were a few years since we went to school together. Molnar Mari became a physician (lung specialist) and is still working on parttime basis.
I read every day your blog which informs me of your improvement.
Fredi and I wish for you further/rapid improvements.
Love, Jutka & Fredi

My Dear Friend Marika,

It is good to know you are finally getting food that is nutritious. You will be feeling stronger by the day now that they are not feeding you fascist food like jello.

It is wonderful to read the blogs from all your friends and family around the globe. You must gather much inner strength from all your messages.

I do hope we will be able to see you when we are in Vicoria but will understand if we don't. The important issue is that you get well.

Love you lots,
Carol Sigurdson and Matthew Swan

Hello Marika and Family,
I am just passing on some Prince George notes that you might find interesting. We have two great NDP candidates: Betty Bekkering in Prince George Peace River, and Bev Collins for Cariboo Prince George. You might remember Bev as a Canadian Action Party candidate in the last two elections. PG is more progressive than you might remember.
You will be pleased to know Mary and I have taken up bird watching if only temporarily. We found a young sparrow sitting on the living room window sill (on the inside - no tromping through the woods on cold mornings for us!) Often when we see a strange bird or an especially pretty one, I still want to call you to come over and see it, or at least identify it. We really enjoyed that walk along the ocean with you two. We are looking forward to our next visit.
Love Peter and Mary

Dear Marika--I only found out today that you were in hospital... I wish you much strength and healing. We are having lovely weather in Prince George right now and the leaves are starting to turn... yesterday morning on the way to work I had an almost-full moon on one side of the car and the aurora on the other, and I was thinking of you, Marika, because you were the one who told me how to use the web to track good aurora nights... Anyway you would have liked the show. Thinking of you, with warm appreciation, Jacqueline (Holler, once known as the "New Marika"!)

The progress reports are very cheering to me, Marika. The protein should give you a real boost. I hear Vicky has given you a pedicure, and your hair will be fine, I'm sure. David and Vicky were so kind to get in touch with me.

I'm enjoying the last few days in Maine. Have gone in the ocean every day, but it is definitely cooling off.

Thinking of you every day.
Love, Katherine

Hi Marika,

The art gallery group were at the Winchester Gallery today admiring the work of 90 year old Joseph Patchett. His marvelous use of color reminded us of your work. And over a coffee at Ottavio's we all talked about you and your wonderful family and we all want to wish you well.

It was good to read in Mark's blog that you're beginning to be able to take some food again -- let me know when you're ready for some home-made soup (not spicy, I promise).

Love,
Katrin

Hello my dear Marika,

I miss not being able to talk with you. I am sure it will not be long and we will continue our phone coversations. They are always an inspiration to me. Our discussions on books that we are reading to our humour about various issues are very up lifting. Looking forward to the this in the future.

I do hope the nutrition that you are receiving will make you stronger, and back to the Marika we all know and love.

Keeping my fingers crossed that we will be able to see you when we are in Victoria.

Much love,

Carol Sigurdson and Matthew Swan
